World Osteoporosis Day and The Bone Health Mountain

New Zealand joins a major international awareness campaign sweeping through more than 40 countries. World Osteoporosis Day is being marked in Auckland this Friday, 20 October, from 7.30am to 2pm, with the Bone Health Mountain Mission taking place at Queen Elizabeth Square (bottom of Queen Street), Auckland.

Run or step up the bone health mountain with Allison Roe and other celebrities. Allison will lead the charge up a 5 metre high milk crate mountain constructed to make Osteoporosis top of people’s minds.

Other events around world to raise awareness about this preventable disease can be seen at: http://www.osteofound.org/activities/world_osteporosis_day/2006_activities.php

In addition to the celebrities, Lynda McNamara, a 37 year old Osteoporosis sufferer will be there to run up the mountain with Allison.  Whilst many people perceive the illness to be an ‘old peoples’ disease’, Lynda knows differently having suffered from osteoporosis for 5 years.  In fact, bones can begin to break down after the age of 25, so it is important that people maintain bone health throughout their lives.

Osteoporosis is on the rise, with over 50% of women and up to 30% of men in New Zealand who live into their sixties suffering a fracture related to Osteoporosis.  This event is to help educate people about the importance of diet and regular exercise to maintain strong bones.

Julia Gallagher from Osteoporosis New Zealand said about the day and the event,  “It is great that we are doing something so public; an event like this brings attention to this disease, because it really is the silent epidemic - many people simply don’t know that they are at risk or that they have got it.  We want this event to bring osteoporosis to people’s attention and encourage them to take some proactive steps with their diet and exercise so that it does not become an issue.”

When it comes to diet here in New Zealand, there is a misperception about bone health being solely to do with calcium intake and so many people believe that because of a ‘high dairy diet’, bone health shouldn’t be an issue. In fact, vitamin D and vitamin K are also key in calcium absorption.   Anlene, the milk product endorsed by Allison Roe in New Zealand is not just calcium rich, but is enriched with vitamin D for calcium absorption and the Phyto K protein, critical for bone mineralization.
