Running Faster After Childbirth – Inspiring Gold Medal Mother Kerryn McCann the Australian gold medal winner at the Commonwealth Games Marathon in Sydney sends her best wishes to all participating in Run2Heal this Sunday!
I caught up with the 37 year old mother of two last week in Auckland. We ran together; I felt like the incredible hulk towering over the very dainty, petite Kerryn. The beauty of having been a competitive runner is that you never lose your ability to be able to talk and run at the same time. This is what I learned.
Kerryn showed promise as a young runner but during those mid teen years she let athletics go. She bounced back at about 19 and never looked back. However, it wasn’t until years later after Kerryn became a Mother that her running times dramatically improved! She gained 16kg’s on her tiny frame during pregnancy and over the following year with consistent training she regained her svelte form and calved minutes off all her personal best running times. She said that ‘being a Mum meant that life changed forever and children provided another focus besides training. Motherhood made me feel more relaxed going into races as my family was now the priority.”
During pregnancy Kerryn ran gently for 7 months 2 or 3 times a week. Following childbirth she rested for 7-8 weeks to adjust before returning to a pattern of running and walking three times a week to begin, gradually increasing the work load as her body felt capable. Eating plenty and healthily meant that Kerryn was able to train regularly and breast- feed her fist baby, son Benton, for 14 months!
Within 2 years of childbirth Kerryn had carved an incredible 8 minutes off her personal best marathon time and posted personal bests for all other distances too!
